With all the turmoil around us there has never been a time when the world needed to adopt the principles of NLP more than it does right now. Clear thinking and rational decision making is necessary to solve many of the worlds most pressing issues and NLP is one of the most effective tools at human disposal.

NLP is an acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The  science and art of NLP therefore involves examining the interplay between our mind and senses, the language we use ...and the models of the world we create now or have created in the past.

The neuro part of the phrase pertains to the mind, linguistics refers to the role of language in our lives and our self talk. The programming is the map and the images we use in exploring and interpreting events in our lives.

There are two fundamental beliefs that are key in NLP They are -

The Map is Not the Territory AND Life and 'Mind' are Systemic Processes.

What does it mean to say the map is not the territory? Well simply that how we experience reality is subjective and based on our belief systems and our ability to interpret reality through our limited senses.

In a way we can never really know reality but only our view of reality. In other words our reality is filtered by our view of it and our view of it is what determines our reality. This view is made up of the sensory representations we contstruct and it is malleable and we can alter how we perceive and respond to the external world. Our map of reality can be almost as compelling as reality itself and this truth is at the heart of a great many problems that people face...hence the saying that - perception is reality.

The formal working framework of NLP was created and systemised by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. These two individuals had specialties in language ( Grinder ) and Mathematics ( Bandler ) and in the 1970's they collaborated in books and teachings to form the basis of what we now call NLP.

The originators of NLP had this to say in defining the practice " the study of the structure of subjective experience" (Dilts et al; 1980).

Later in 1987, Judith DeLozier and John Grinder define NLP as "an accelerated learning strategy for the detection and utilization of patterns in the world".

A definition or two is quite interesting but what about the usefulness of NLP to you or I, in a very practical sense?

First and foremost NLP involves modelling ouselves on the effective patterns of behaviour of leaders in whatever field we wish to achieve better results in. Neuro linguistic programming enables us to both identify patterns of behaviour and communication in others to better understand and interract with them....and also to use similar patterns when trying to model successful individuals.

NLP is very much a practical science of human achievement based on the fact that we can observe and model successful behaviour as a short cut to achieving our own goals.
